Getting Ready To Make a Big Move? Here Are 3 Simple Ways To Cut Your Moving Costs

Car shipping process | Choosing an auto shipper | Industry Information

When it comes to moving costs, it can be tricky to plan out how much you'll need to spend on things like packing boxes and transporting your car -- and what's even more frustrating is that you probably aren't even too sure what a reasonable cost for these services should be.

But one thing is clear: saving money is definitely going to be one of your top priorities during your move, regardless of how much you plan on paying. So how can you make sure that you're saving as much money as possible, without risking the safekeeping of your items? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Pack your own boxes.

Many people don't realize that it's possible to get cardboard boxes for free -- just head over to your local grocery store or convenience store and ask if they have any extra boxes. In most cases, these stores just end up paying for a disposal service to transport recyclables like cardboard boxes, and they won't mind giving you some for free.

2. Unplug appliances and turn off the heating/cooling while you're away.

It's easy to forget about these things simply because you wouldn't normally unplug all of your appliances when you leave the house -- but if you're moving and you're spending a lot of time on the road, it's a good idea to save energy (and consequently, money) this way.

3. Use a car shipping service.

Whether you have one antique car to move across town or you have four separate cars that need to be transported 2,916 miles from New York City to San Francisco, taking advantage of car shipping services will always be cost-effective (and will reduce a lot of your stress, too). If you're really focused on creating a strict budget, you can opt for open car carriers (which tend to be about 60% cheaper than enclosed carriers) and try to schedule your move in the winter months rather than during the summer (because summer car shipping rates tend to be about $200-$300 more).

So now we're turning to you for some input -- do you have any awesome ideas for saving money during a big move? We'd love to hear any tips and tricks you may have!
