Three Tips for Making Sure Your Shipped Motorcycle Arrives in One Piece

Motorcycle Shipping

Did you know that there are more than six million registered motorcycles in the U.S.? There are several situations you might find yourself in where you need to move your motorcycle a long distance, but can't get it there by riding. Ordering bikes online, moving across country, and taking part in out of state rallies might all be reasons you are looking into motorcycle hauling services. Here are three tips for making sure your bike arrives all in one piece.

1. How to Prepare Before Motorcycle Transport

When you're about to put your bike in someone else's care, it makes sense to document the exact condition your bike is in beforehand. Take photos and note any existing scratches and scuffs, so that you don't accidentally blame someone else for them. Empty the saddlebags, remove loose items and accessories, and drain out the gas. You should always check beforehand with the requirements of your auto shipping company, though. There is one international shipper, for example, which requires tanks to be 1/4 full.

2. Find an Affordable but Reliable Motorcycle Shipping Company

We all want to save money, of course, but make sure that you're not sacrificing the safety of your bike in the process. Luckily, the U.S. Department of Transportation requires that all vehicle transport companies have cargo and liability insurance covering them. Online reviews can also be a quick and easy way to get a feel for how well companies handle the average customer. Be wary of quotes that seem too low, as they can be a sign of companies cutting corners in service.

3. Extras for Safety

Did you know that the average cost of a new motorcycle is about $14,500? You've invested enough in your bike that it is worth your time and money to protect your investment. For this reason, especially if your bike is still in great condition, ask about options for shipping. Bikes can sometimes be individually crated for extra protection, and they can be braced or blocked when there are multiple bikes.
